Diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis, dental scaling, gum treatment, implant surgery and hard and soft tissue surgery are its main areas. Specialist training is a separate programme completed after dental school.

The number of implants needed is decided by assessing the condition of the jaw, bone volume, the planned superstructure design and the opposing jaw together; no fixed number is given in advance.
